Twenty-two years before the birth of Aunt Mamie, Dr. J. R. B. and Mary E. Gracey Adams had a daughter, their first-born, named Laura Clementine Adams. She lived to be seventeen years old. A newspaper clipping in the Gracey Bible gives this account: "At the residence of her uncle, Captain D. J. Wood (husband of Martha Ann Gracey) in Tipton county, Tennessee, in the 17th year of her age, Miss Laura Clementine, only daughter of Dr. J. R. B. and Mary E. Gracey Adams, of Iredell County, North Carolina. The interesting and pious young person, whose death is here announced, had left the home of her fond parents on the 15th of September to spend a few months with friends and relations in Tennessee. But scarcely had she reached the end of her journey, when she was taken dangerously ill. And though all that the tenderest sympathy and affection could do, was done, though everything that the science of medicine could afford for relief was at hand, on the 9th of October, her gentle spirit passed away...........She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Fifth Creek." She was buried in Tennessee. Another daughter (Ida Amelia), fourth child of Dr. J. R. B. and Mary E. Adams, was born six years after Laura but only lived fourteen months. Therefore, after six sons, Mary Rebecca "Mamie", the youngest child, found herself more than welcomed and loved by all. In return, she loved and cared for her parents and six brothers and their families, never herself marrying. She was one who was a great inspiration to Sarah Adams Whip in writing and gathering family history. |
