She lived with her parents and grandparents at the Archibald family home {John Archibald (1726-1789 )}, at Fifth Creek, Cool Spring, along with her four younger sisters and younger brother. Her father, James B., died when she was 12 years of age. Her mother, Nancy Clementine died when she was 18 years of age. Mary Elizabeth was left to care for her 86 year old grandfather, Robert Gracey, and young sisters and brother. "Mary took up the burden and proved a wise little mother, learning early 'to bear the yoke.' " Less than a month after her mother died, on May 23, 1849, she married Dr. John Richard Barr Adams. They were the fourth generation to live in the family home. Her grandfather, Robert Gracey, died the following October 1849. |
