"I think Thomas Rhyne was born in Germany. He was an intelligent, industrious man.......a saddler by trade, and he accumulated lands and property very fast. Notwithstanding the tradition that when he first came to this country he so little understood the currency that he thought the people paid him too much for his saddles and he returned part of the price. He lived until 1837 and died at the age of 95 years. He is buried in the private graveyard on his homeplace. He left a large number of worthy descendents. His wife was Barbara Wise. As to the relationship of Thomas Rhyne to the other Rhynes of Gaston County, I find since this investigation there is some difference of opinion. Some say the relationship is distant. Albertus Rhyne, a grandson, says that Thomas came to this country by himself and that he did not have any brothers or sisters." Our Kin by L. H. Hoffman, Dallas, N.C. @S7@ |
