On November l, 1859, James Adams Jr., at age 78, sat down with pen and paper and wrote a "Sketch of the Adams Family." This paper was passed down through the generations and remains in excellent condition. It was given to Esther Adams Hunnicutt by her aunt, Sarah Adams Whip, in 1964, and the information below is taken from this document: "James Adams was born and raised in Ireland. He left his father's in the year 1760. After a voyage of seven weeks and three days he landed in Philadelphia. From there he went to Paxton and boarded with a Mr. Gilreef for one year. During that year he wove about 1400 yards of cloth. He then took a school but a rumor of the Indians preparing for war, the school was discontinued. He then followed mowing and thrashing out grain the remainder of the year. He then went with a Mr. Crowder to Augusta County, Va., and bought a herd of cattle and drove them to Philadelphia, then came to North Carolina in the fall of 1764 and commenced teaching school in Rowan County. On the 19th of December 1765 he married Margaret, daughter of Andrew Morrison, who resided two miles west of Third Creek Church. He bought land on the South Yadkin River nine miles northwest of Statesville and settled there in 1766 where he resided until 1816 when he moved to Pueblo, Ohio,* and died September 25, 1821. His wife had died in January 1806. They reared four sons and five daughters....." *Note: James Adams' second child and eldest son, John, moved to Ohio in 1816, evidently taking his father with him. @S7@ |
