Obituary: HAROLD RICHARD (DICK) HUNNICUTT JR. 1938 - 2003 Dick Hunnicutt was born in Charlotte, N.C. on September 1, 1938. He is the son of H. R. Hunnicutt Sr. and Margaret Neisler Hunnicutt. He grew up in Kings Mountain, N.C., where he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, an Eagle Scout, and graduated from Kings Mountain High School. He attended Davidson College and is a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He graduated from Belmont Abbey College in 1961 with a B.A. in Business Administration. He also attended N.C. State University where he was a member of Sigma Tau Sigma Honorary Fraternity and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Textile Technology in 1963. After graduation, he worked at Parkdale Mills, Inc. in Gastonia for five years. In 1967, he co-founded Kings Mill, Inc. in Kings Mountain, N. C. where he served as Vice-President. In 1973, Kings Mill was merged into Tultex Corporation. He became President of the Tultex Yarn Group in 1976 and was elected Senior Vice-President of Tultex Corporation in 1976. He was named President and Chief Operating Officer of Tultex in 1984 and was elected Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in December, 1988. He retired from Tultex on January 1, 1991 in order to pursue private interests but remained a member of the Board of Directors. He is a member and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia and a member of the Hatteras Marlin Club. He was a member of the Gaston Country Club for 30 years but resigned when he moved to Hatteras. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute, the American Yarn Spinners Association, the N.C. Textile Foundation, the N.C. Textile Manufacturers Association, the National Knitwear Manufacturers Association, the National Cotton Council, the Board of Visitors of N.C. State University, the Hatteras Marlin Club, the Gaston Country Club, the Community Foundation of Gaston County and the Gastonia Board of BB&T. He is a Past President of the American Yarn Spinners Association, a Past Chairman of the National Knitwear Manufacturers Association, a Past President of the North Carolina Textile Foundation, and is currently Commodore of the Hatteras Marlin Club. His hobbies are big-game fishing, hunting, and golf. He is survived by three sons; Harold (Hal) Richard Hunnicutt III and wife, Melanie, of Burlington, NC; Minor (Chip) Adams Hunnicutt of Sunset Beach, NC; Reid Neisler Hunnicutt of Panama City Beach, Florida; and three grandchildren, Harold Richard (Ricky) Hunnicutt IV, Rebecca Blair Hunnicutt, and Andrea Reid Hunnicutt; niece, Susan Neisler Smith of Durham. He resided in Hatteras, NC. |
