Notes
|
In 1943 Nancy Clementine was left a widow, with six young children and an aging father-in-law, Robert Gracey. With much disapproval from her family, she married a much older man, Thomas A. Bell,in 1847, four years after the death of James B. Gracey. This union did not last long as she died on March 28, 1849. Mr. Bell was known as old man "Baldy" Bell. Aunt Mamie said her mother, Mary E. Gracey Adams, (Nancy's oldest daughter), seldom spoke of this marriage. Some say he married her to get her property and her family didn't permit that, so the talk of it worried her to death. I know no more of what happened to Mr. Bell for he did not continue to live in the old family home. The estate was put up for sale, and such property including three slaves was bid by agent and settled by Robert's sons, John Ivey of Columbia, South Carolina, and Minor Winn of Marengo County, Alabama. Minor Winn purchased the old Gracey Bible at this time, which he gave to J.R.B Adams, which I now have and have used to gather much of the information on the Gracey Family.@S7@ |
